The JUCAN project is a collaborative research project funded by the Danish Ministry of foreign Affairs (DANIDA). The partnership is part of a long term collaboration between the different departments and institutes at the University of Nairobi. The JUCAN project is a five-year research grant (2024-2029) on nature-based solutions governance research. The project is led by Prof. Thuita Thenya of University of Nairobi (UoN), WMI and Prof. Iben Nathan of University of Copenhagen (UoC).
JUCAN, an acronym for Justice, Carbon, Nature, is a research initiative focused on understanding how Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) can be effectively governed to promote a just green transition in Kenya. Led by a consortium of Kenyan and Danish researchers and institutions, JUCAN investigates the governance arrangements and institutional dynamics surrounding NbS, with a particular emphasis on their implications for environmental justice.
By exploring how different stakeholders perceive and prioritize NbS goals, and by analyzing how NbS governance is shaped at both national and local levels, the project aims to provide insights into the relationships between NbS, climate, biodiversity, and human well-being.
